Transitional States is Robert Polidori’s attempt to visually portray aspects of historical interpretation through the various stages of restoration at the Palace of Versailles. Through these images the question arises, is historical revisionism an act of creation or recreation? What does it really mean to restore a room? The curatorial decisions that control this process illuminate the political will and personal aesthetic tastes of the restoration process. These rooms, photographed over a period of 25 years, depict the temporary and fleeting situations afforded by the labour of these restorations.
